Number 22: Eat bugs

September 23, 2019

This was the task I was least looking forward to.  Just the thought of it gives me the heebie-jeebies!  I contemplated different option, powdered crickets that could be hidden in food, bugs in a lolly pop or chocolate covered.  Nothing really appealed to me.

Then today it happened!  I was on duty this morning, indoor primary eating.  One of our older students, Callie, who is such an amazing volunteer, was supervising lunch for a Grade 1 class.  The students were making a fuss over what she was eating.  I asked her what the problem was, and she explained that she was eating mealworms.  Her dad and she had purchased a mealworm farm and have been farming them.  The batch she was eating was from their first batch of babies.  The discussion continued almost like a scene from Forest Gump.  She proceeded to tell me all the different ways they had cooked the mealworms, deep fry, dehydrated, with BBQ seasoning, salted....  It was quite amusing.

At the end of her story, I asked if I might be able to eat one mealworm to get this off my list.  My stomach was turning even at the idea, but I had to seize the opportunity.  She agreed, and so I carefully chose a mealworm out of her plastic container, took a deep breath and chewed.

The texture was crunchy, almost hollow inside, if that makes sense, and tasted like BBQ seasoning.  It really wasn't bad tasting, however the thought of the bug in me kept my stomach churning quite a while.

I am thrilled that this is done.  I will never do it again!
